Could You Ace a Dental Exam?

Could You Ace A Dental ExamSchool is back in session, but when it comes to dental exams and cleanings, that’s not something you study for, hoping to get a good grade. For children, teens, adults and elders, dental exams are recommended about every six months for a reason: because even diligent at-home care cannot fully care for your smile and oral health. There are many services our Dallas, TX dental office provides at a dental checkup and cleaning, that you will be unable to do when you are doing your routine dental care at home.

What Happens At A Dental Exam?

If you are an established patient, your dental exams and cleanings will usually follow a similar pattern. You will be greeted by our friendly office staff. We can make note of any changes in your health, new medications you are taking, or general changes in your lifestyle. At some appointments, we will take digital X-rays. This helps us see under gum surfaces and inside of teeth as we monitor for orthodontic issues or early signs of decay. We will gently clean tooth surfaces and between teeth, perform an oral cancer screening, and make sure any restorations are firmly in place.  Dental exams are an excellent time for you to bring up any questions, or discuss cosmetic concerns about your smile.

A Note For New Patients

We love seeing new patients in our office, whether they are family members of current patients, or people who have relocated and are seeking a family dentist in the Dallas, TX area. At your first check up and cleaning, we will take the time to get to know you and obtain your dental history. We may request records from your previous dentist, and we will also perform a comprehensive exam, take any needed digital X-rays and perform the same detailed cleaning, oral cancer screening and gum examination as provided to our established patients. Our patient forms are available online, to make your first visit as efficient as possible.

What Should I Be Doing At Home?

Your oral care habits at home can make a difference in what we see, and bring to your attention when you visit our office in person. You should be brushing twice a day and flossing once, every single day. Gently brush all tooth surfaces, and clean gently at the gumline, without scrubbing. Use dental floss to clean the edges of each tooth, and to dislodge any bits of food between teeth. Gently slide dental floss under the gumline, to clear out bacteria that may be hiding there.
